Curry Fried Fish

Curry Fried Fish

Occasionally, I’ll get urgent texts at about midday. An emergency has occurred and I must respond! Choices by Shawn has their fish and chips this weekend! WE MUST GO! For those just tuning in, Choices by Shawn is a local restaurant that has a dedicated gluten-free kitchen and a well-labelled menu that we find very easy to navigate towards friendly choices. Weekly, they have a special of the weekend. Every three months or so, that option is Stacy’s favorite, the gluten-free fish and chips. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but no one seems to sell fried fish that...

Pankoconut Fish Sticks and Spicy Mango Salsa

Pankoconut Fish Sticks and Spicy Mango Salsa

You know, panko crumbs. And coconut. Stretching that too far? Well, that’s what they remind us of – sorry!  Alright, well, no matter what you call these – they’ll remind you of coconut shrimp. But they’re fish sticks! We served these with two “normal” eating young boys and they were licking their lips and asking for more. The whole idea came from Stacy finding fish on super sale at the super market. Now, we have made a vow to only consume sustainable and humane meat. However, knowing that it was 8pm at night and the meat was about to be thrown out if...

Eileen’s Aloo Gobi Fail…Curry Win

We have the best friends in the entire world. Sincerely. Eileen and Aimee are new friends from our paleo community. Earlier this month I sent out a pleading cry for help from friends to guest blog on the site. We’re swamped with book stuff, the holidays were in full blast and the vow renewal planning is a full time job in itself. Right around this time I was trying Eileen’s curry at our holiday paleo potluck, I begged her for the recipe. We love curries and this one in particular had the perfect sweet, savory and spicy balance. I was thrilled when she agreed and sent the recipe in...

Turkey Thai Basil

Turkey Thai Basil

One of our many “tricks” to making paleo affordable is to buy turkeys at the supermarket after Thanksgiving. No, they’re not free-range or humanely raised.  However, they are cheap eats. And with a ton of boys who love to eat us out of house and home, sources of mass quantities of meat at $.49/lb are too good to pass up.  We do our best to find a brand of turkey that’s antibiotic-free and enjoy the fact that we can cook up one bird and feed the family for days.  Usually we buy 2 or 3 birds – as much as our fridge and freezer can hold! So what do you do with...

The Bacon Chicken

The Bacon Chicken

Some days, you know exactly what you’re going to make for dinner. Those days are fantastic: you have a plan, you know you have all the ingredients, and there is little creative thinking involved. I wish I had more of those days. Other days, you find yourself at a complete loss at 4 PM and have to scramble to throw together dinner. Sometimes, that can lead to disaster. Other times, the result is genius. Like, let’s say, an idea (a dream really) about taking a whole chicken and wrapping it in bacon and just roasting it like that. The Bacon Chicken with Insanely Delicious Bacon...

Hot Pot at home, and jackfruit too!

Hot Pot at home, and jackfruit too!

One of our favorite meals is to have our own “Hot Pot” night.  We’re fortunate to live in an area filled with lots of varying cultures who bring with them restaurants and new food experiences to share.  One of our favorites (particularly because it can be made Paleo so easily AND is a lot of fun) is to do what’s called Hot Pot.  But it can get costly when your littles ask for endless servings of shellfish, so we started doing it at home.  It’s become tradition when our friends James & Brady visit, because they love hot pot as much as we do. We wrote about...

Stacy’s 30th Birthday

Stacy’s 30th Birthday

Saturday was Stacy’s 30th birthday; after 11 days of detox she was excited to eat the birthday foods we’d been planning in celebration.  She’d requested Aarti Paarti’s Pomegranate Sriracha Chicken Wings and Primal-Palate’s Carrot Cake as her dinner of choice. We all enjoyed a rare treat for the family, since the cake’s cream cheese frosting was the real thing. My favorite part of these photos is that there is so clearly a “pecking” order that Cole has established.  And by established, I mean used incredible negotiation skill and manipulation...

Saturday Night Date Dinner, Part Duck

Saturday Night Date Dinner, Part Duck

If you missed my humor with the title of this post, that’s a shame.  I was hoping your mind would connect the dots to “deux.” You know, because that’s a french word.  And the french love duck?  Oh good grief, this is going downhill fast.  I’ll just get to it. Every Saturday night Matt and I try to have a date night.  Does it always work out?  No.  But, usually we can magically pull something out.  On this particular night, Matt and I happened to have duck on hand.  We usually don’t purchase duck (despite loving the taste) because it’s pretty...
