Favorite Things Giveaway!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED, CONGRATULATIONS TO Sharmista FOR WINNING THE PURE WRAPS!

I struggled with the name of this post, ultimately I feel like you’re expecting me to wave my arms around and shout “and you get a car, and you get a car, and you get a car”. Heads up: that’s not going to happen. However, we will give one of the items below away to a random commenter – see bottom of post for rules.

Since we’ve been feeling hum drum Negative Nancy lately – it felt like high time to talk about some stuff we LIKE. The results are a list of our new favorite things. What have we spent our money on lately, and been happy to do so?

Mount Vernon Farms pastured meat. Half a pig and a grass-finished quarter cow, to be specific. When we lost power this weekend (a result of the “Derecho 2012” DC Metro area storm) the first thing that occurred to me was how to protect my deep chest freezer filled with MVF meat. I’m not at all sponsored by the farm, nor do I get any affiliate money or discounts – I simply freakin’ love their farm.

If you’re in the area you should go. If you’re not, find a local sustainable farm through EatWild.com. For this giveaway item (unless you’re local) we’ll send you something from US Wellness Meats (as we lack the dry ice and Styrofoam shipping containers to ship our own supply of meat!), who does online orders and delivers products of the utmost quality. Might we recommend their “meat sticks”, hot dogs or 75% ground beef. Great option if you’re unable to visit and buy from local farms!

Photos by Molly Peterson, wife of Farm Manager Mike Peterson (who also happens to be a contributor for Paleo magazine)

No. 1 Sons fermented foods – another local resource, this adorable couple ferments for fun and the results are some phenomenal probiotic-rich foods our whole family enjoys. This week at the farmer’s market they had a “storm special” and we got fermented bloody Mary mix (tomato juice, jalapeno and spices), sauerkraut, salsa verde (great on eggs!) and dill pickles – every single one is fantastic. They’re my new favorite vendor at the Fairfax farmer’s market.

If you’re not local we can send you something from Fabulous Ferments, another legit and awesome fermentation vendor I recommend you check out!

Photos by No. 1 Sons Facebook page, we have 3 blond sons – we didn’t pick up a cute patriotic straggler!

The Essential Gluten-Free Baking Guide [Part 1] by Brittany Angell and Iris Higgins. I think you’ll LOVE this book. Maybe it’s because it’s got “Ask the Expert” interviews with some of my favorite ladies in the business including Spunky Coconut and Elana’s Pantry. Or maybe it’s because it answered the questions you all have been asking us for a LONG time and I now have a resource I can point you to.

No matter the reason why, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone trying to learn and master grain-free baking. It’s a humble little book. Is it super thick and dense? No. Is it filled with gorgeous and glossy photos? No. Is it focusing on the information you’ve been trying to figure out since quitting processed foods and trying to bake with almond and coconut flour? Absolutely.

The Spunky Coconut Dairy-Free Ice Cream Cook Book by Kelly Brozyna. I talked about this book and paleo adaptations of recipes on the podcast I did with Kelly a few weeks ago. Admittedly, I hid the book from the boys for a few weeks until our case of coconut milk came in from Amazon. The last thing I needed was them knowing we had an entire book of ice cream they could have, with no ingredients with which to make it.

But with this week’s heat wave and my work load lightening up a little, the boys were thrilled when we pulled this out and told them they could make anything in it. Finian and I chose the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Pudding Pops, but didn’t have the patience to wait for “pops”. We used our ice cream maker and it turned out just fabulous. ALL the boys give this book two thumbs up and are begging to make more recipes already! I only wish there were  a picture for each recipe, since Kelly’s photography skills have gotten ah-maze-ing!

Pure Wraps. Because sometimes you’d like to do as Lord Sandwich intended and eat your meat while you play cards. Or go on a picnic, or school or the millions of other places that make a sandwich convenient. We heard about Pure Wraps in passing online and tracked them down because they sounded too good to be true. But they are and delicious too!

These are the only ingredients in them: Coconut meat, Coconut water, Himalayan salt. It’s so fantastic it’s almost unbelievable! Would you like 4 packs of them?

Last but not least, our Soda Stream. Matt’s mom got this as a gift for him recently, and we’ve been using it ever since like crazy. The canisters are refillable (at any William-Sonoma or Bed, Bath and Beyond), the bottles reusable – making it a cheap and green option for carbonated beverages! Just don’t use the starter kit syrups!

I haven’t found a “kit” that doesn’t include those yet – but we threw ours away. Here’s our favorite “recipes” to make your own “soda”! A giant discovery for us was adding flavor extracts to the charged bottles. A whole world of possibilities!

Lemon & Lime Fizzy – Add the juice of a half lemon and a half lime, a few drops of stevia if you’re into that sort of thing
Almond & Orange Zest – Add a teaspoon of almond extract and the zest of one orange, a few drops of stevia if you’re into that sort of thing
Stacy’s Gin & soda – In a tumbler, add two shots of Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire gin, the juice of a half lime, add ice and fill the rest with plain carbonated soda water

[Edited to add] LAVANILA Healthy Deodorant, Vanilla Passion Fruit fragrance. I’ve tried almost every healthy deodorant on the market and they all left me feeling like a stinky hippy at the end of a long day. With 5pm meetings in a corporate world, I can’t feel stinky and was about ready to give up… until I found LAVANILA. It was quite an initial sticker shock, but I bought it at Sephora/Amazon where they accept returns unconditionally. I figured if I didn’t like it or find it worth the money I’d return it.

Instead I ended up going back weeks later and buying by the bulk! The stuff left me feeling clean, fresh and feminine all day long. It ends up costing about $.50/day (lasts about 6 weeks). For me, that’s a worthy investment!

Those are our (unsponsored) favorite things right now. Anything look appealing? If so, do all of the following and post a comment saying what you’ve done no later than Monday June July 9th.

  3. Use social media to share your item of choice with your online buddies  – even better, contact the vendor and tell them they are awesome and that we sent ya

I have been trying to duplicate the Pure Wraps, but haven’t nailed it yet.  They cost a fortune considering how fast they are consumed.  Maybe if I had a few bags on hand to use in the food duplication lab :)…
Love your site and book! (chelsea7403@yahoo.com)  Thank you.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway…  I simply cannot choose from your generous selection!  I am a wife and mom to 4…  I completely love your journey, so which would you have chosen early in the journey to paleo and providing healthy grub for your family?  We love meat, anything fermented (kimchie, pickles, etc), ice cream, and the gluten-free baking…

  • Emily
    July 3, 2012 at 10:54 AM

I don’t do social media (too much of an addictive personality for the time suck that is FB, and with four kids…you get the idea), so I am going to share joy with those around me, starting by cooking something wonderfully yummy and Paleo for the fam.  I’d love to have the soda stream!  I have several things from U.S. Wellness right now and would love that, too (sugar free bacon rocks!), but I’m currently on Day 14 of my very first Whole30 and getting kinda tired of regular water, black coffee, and mint tea, so the Soda Stream appealed most to me.  Thanks for the giveaway!  I ADORE you guys…we bought Eat Like A Dinosaur and have recommended it to everybody, even people like my parents without little guys at home!  My 7-year-old went through the cookbook and bookmarked about 90% of the recipes he wants us to try!

I can fulfill all of these options!  I already Like (LOVE) Paleoparents.com and ELaD on Facebook.  I can’t stop telling people about how great I feel eating Paleo and the cookbook I got with fabulous recipes (ELaD).  I would love to have the Gluten free Baking Cook Book, it would help my kids with the transition that is still really challenging (wish I knew about paleo, to start when they were younger).  As far as sharing joy and being a good person, I think that I’d say I fulfill that at work.  I work as a nurse and give my sincerest self to my patients and their families.  I am totally committed to getting them well, comfortable and calm; I am happy for their successes, whether is a pain free night of sleep or a first walk down the hall after surgery.  I step into their family as a sort of lost cousin, to provide them with some love and support when they need it.  I can see the benefit of this care in my patient’s but it is so fulfilling and gratifying for me that I can’t imagine ever tiring of it.  I am so lucky to be a nurse.  Thank you, Matt and Stacy, for giving of yourselves with sincerity, so that we can all benefit.  And thanks for the fun give aways!

Soda Stream would be amazing! I’ve really had a hard time giving up and convincing my wife and kids to give up soda. With this machine, I think we could make some really great/healthy fizzy drinks which would really get our entire family on board!

Mount Vernon Farms/US Wellness meats: Where I live, our grocery stores have hardly anything grass fed. No Trader Joes, Whole Foods etc. As a result, it’s been hard for us to find good quality foods.

Pur Wraps: My wife has just started Paleo and is really struggling with the lack of sandwiches. Also, our kids are still eating wheat 🙁 so this might really help us finally stop the madness!!!

Whoohoo – fun post and reviews!  I would love to try the wraps.  Haven’t used anything or taken the time to bake some myself since I found out the brown rice food for like ones had gluten.  I feel better not eating rice anyway… I like you on Facebook!!!  Thanks!

Great giveaway. I love ferments but I already skilled at crafting local artisan ferments, so I don’t need that option. And since I have been working on my digestion and trying to gain weight as I’m underweight since the end of May and finding out in the last few weeks I can’t do gluten anymore, I was on and still sort of am on a major creamy, rich, and smooth or cakey kick and trying to wrap my head around the idea it was okay to have ice cream for lunch if that was the only thing my system could handle and enjoy.  So I would have to pick Kelly Brozyna’s Dairy-Free Ice Cream Book. Now all I need is a ice cream maker……

Though the baking book sounds awesome too, as I’ve been onto cakey things or baked goods as well and trying to now learn a whole new skill of gluten-free baking.

I would have to pick the Pure Wraps – sounds like an awesome invention, and I definitely miss my flour tortillas, so I would love to try them out!!

    Meat!!
My husband is the shopper in the family and I would love to be able to tell him “No meat this week, I’ve got it covered!”  And then see the smile as he scarfs the deliciousness down.

I would love the Spunky Coconut’s Dairy free Ice cream book!!! I am a slave to cream in general 😉 cream sauces, cream in my coffee and cream in my …ice…???
Anyway, My family of 7 went Paleo (our version of it ) 2 years ago and, have learned so much about our bodies this past year that we are getting a bit more strict (we have a few cheat days a mo where we allow some sugar and Gf goodies in our meals), but we have never ‘truly’ given up the dairy (embarrassed), we do not have raw milk options here in Eastern Iowa and I no longer want to put baseline, conventional milk the bodies of my family. We are doing a lot of coconut milk and almond milk smoothies but thats just NOT ice cream 😉

    Thank You!!

  • Lawtons

    I have done it all!

I would really like to try the wraps. One of the things I still really miss since going Paleo/Primal almost a year ago is the simple sandwich. These look promising and I would love to try them. I bet our kids would even eat them!

I would love those coconut wraps! They look fantastic and as a person who is intolerant to so many foods and eats a Paleo diet (though I can’t have meat either…boo!) coconut is such a ‘go to’ product. Thank you!!

Love this giveaway– especially the first condition for entry 🙂 I would love love looove a soda stream– I think it would be the greatest thing to have constant access to fizzy h20! I like buying sparkling water when I can and adding my own fruit, but my grad student budget can’t justify a soda stream (just yet, anyways). Thanks for hosting the giveaway, and I loved reading about others of your favorite products, how fun!

This is a fantastic giveaway. I would love the Spunky Coconut Ice Cream cookbook! My summer goal is to learn how to make dairy free ice cream and think this book is just the thing I need to reach my goal!

What an awesome giveaway! I think I’ve fulfilled all of the requirements (I try to be joyful and encouraging every day to friends and family, I liked you on fb and twitter, and I shared it on fb). I would love to win either of the two cookbooks or the sodastream (or anything, really! ). I still have quite a long way to go on my weight loss journey, but I’m down over 30 pounds since starting Paleo this year(down to 207 pounds from 240 on January 1st!!) and anything that will help me stick to this lifestyle change would be awesome! Good luck to everyone, and I love your book, by the way!!

  • Dawn
    July 3, 2012 at 6:29 PM

I try to be joyful but recently I was at BK with my daughter (getting burgers to take the buns off of) and saw a bunch of homeless people who were hungry.  I ended up going inside and getting them a soda and 3 basic hamburgers (I couldn’t afford much more).  When I went to give it to them they were getting kicked out by the manager and had asked if they could go inside to eat it.  He said no but they were very grateful to my daughter and I.

I already follow you guys on facebook and have promoted the US Wellness meats, though I’d personally love either the meat or the soda stream.

I really have my sights set on the Soda Stream.  I had learned last month about using flavored Stevia and sparkling water to make a “soda.”  I haven’t had a chance to try it yet but I think it sounds great with some Rootbeer Stevia!  The recipes you suggested also sound fabulous.  Who knew that a Soda Stream could have a place in a Paleo household?!  Of course I follow you on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!!!

PS – I, too, have been hiding the Spunky Coconut Ice Cream book until I can gather the ingredients!!!

Great giveaway! I’ve liked you on FB but don’t have a twitter account so I hope thats ok. Told my friends to stop on by and check out your blog. Decisions, decisions.  If picked I’d love to try something from Fabulous Ferments. My husband lost his entire large intestine (well, not lost since we know where it went) to cancer last November and his doctor has told him to take probiotics. The pills don’t agree with him and yogurt (milk) doesn’t either. Perhaps the fermented veggies would.

We have a soda stream and I absolutely LOVE IT. I have never been a soda drinker, but it helped my partner get off of soda!

I have yet to order from US Wellness Meats, but I know I should We have some great local farms around here, and some great farmers’ markets, but those are seasonal.

Liked on facebook and I love the pinterest posts!

Kelly’s ice cream book please! I want to make a few things with my younger brother when I am visiting him this summer. He loves ice cream and also needs to eat dairy, gluten, and soy free. I’d also like to get him away from sugar and start using fruit sweeteners instead. Anything sounds great though, except I have a penguin soda stream 🙂 Thanks!

Requirements = Done. ; )  I’d love the soda stream, or the pastured meat! Soda Stream – because I spend way too much money on Trader Joe’s Lime Mineral water. I LOVE bubbly!! Pastured meat – ’cause meat is so yummers!

All the giveaways are super exciting, but I think I’d be most psyched about trying the coconut wraps.  I’d love to be able to have some kind of sandwich again and nuts and eggs are both out for me, so the wraps would be perfect!

I am new to your blog and have never heard of Mt. Vernon Farms.  I am local and will definitely check it out!  I also have 4 boys, so I can relate to how busy your life truly is….and I want to know how you get your kids to help bake without a huge fight breaking out!??! 😉

I would love to try them all….but probably the soda stream most because I am helplessly addicted to diet pepsi!

I’d love to try ANY of these things– wow! But most of all I’ve been hankering for the soda stream, since I’ve mostly given up soda and now I’m drinking lots of seltzer. I’ve done all four of these things too!

  • Barbara

I did everything except twitter because I don’t use it. I liked you on FB ages ago and I shared on FB as well. I would love to have any of the prizes but the meat is my first choice followed by the gf baking guide any the wraps. Thanks so much for the giveaway and glad to see you headed back to the positive side. I’ve really missed that from both of you.

They don’t drink a lot of soda, but when they do, I would love to be able to monitor what goes into it. And the fact that it has reusable containers is a bonus!

    Thanks,

Hi! I love what you do with your boys. I wish all of mine (6 boys & 1 girl) would be so enthusiastic about real food. Instead I’m pretty good at hiding real food in our meals. As I live in Australia I don’t think I would qualify, but in case you would like to share the love my way I would love the ice cream cookbook.  🙂

I already Like you guys on FB and share your stuff there as well! (I just recommended Eat Like a Dinosaur to a friend on a parenting forum whose family is trying GF for one of their kids.)

My fave would be the meat, but right behind it would be the wraps, followed by the ferments. And we’re relatively local to you (MoCo MD). 🙂 Crossing my fingers for my very first Giveaway win, as so far the Giveaway gods haven’t smiled on me – yet. *grin*

I already like you guys on facebook, i wish there were a love button. I’ll be honest and say I don’t go on twitter often and have only tweeted once to support my niece in an audition, but I follow you there as well! I would be out of my mind happy, it really doesn’t take much, to win any one of these products but I think the ice cream book would be the biggest winner with my family. I’ve easily converted my children to almond milk a few years ago but ice cream is still a big love for them. I would love to have more options that would make us all happy about them eating (dairy free!) ice cream. Thanks for all your great work, recipes – please keep them coming!

Oh, oh oh. I would love to win the meat from MVF. I live in Fredericksburg and have driven to many different farms in our state looking for good food. I agree with Karyn, I hope Im sharing joy with people daily.  The soda stream interests me the most as I would truly like to get my husband off soda.  I can see how healthy he looks when he is “off” the stuff and how easily he gains weight and feels like crud when he is “on” it.  At least the Soda Stream would provide a healthier option for bubbles….and my little boys would really enjoy it.  Thanks for the chance to win such fantastic items.

I really appreciate your blog – it’s really like a breath of fresh air! I already “like” you on Facebook (for that matter, have already done items 1 through 3). I’m really interested in the SodaStream. I have this bad diet soda habit and I’ve been reluctant to cut it, even though I know I need to evenutally. So having an option of making my own natural “sodas” sweetened with stevia would be kind of huge for me. Thanks for doing such an awesome giveaway! melindapate at gmail dot com

Love your posts, and while i adore the Miller family i live in Virginia and can get to the farm as needed. I have wanted a soda stream for awhile if only for the seltzer water. I’ve discovered that i don’t crave the soda regular or diet as much as i crave the FIZZ of seltzer water. Being diabetic, that’s a great thing since it means i can still have a fizzy treat .
Thank you for putting yourselves out there, i have liked you on Facebook for months and have learned so much.

I have to pick?? I would love any and all of these!! I think the No 1 Fermented foods would be great because I know I need to get more of them in my diet, but the meat would be awesome, the soda stream and wraps fun to try, always game for non-dairy ice cream as I get further into this paleo thing, and gluten-free baking is good for my girls, too!

  • Erin M
    July 8, 2012 at 3:50 PM

My father was diagnosed with AML 3.5 months ago and hasn’t improved his eating habits. He loves to drink pop, especially Mountain Dew, and this would be a good start to wean him off the liquid crack. Baby steps with everything else.

Great favorites! After considering all of them, I would LOVE the deodorant!! I’ve had the same trouble with the natural deodorants and i’m almost ready to go back to the bad anti persp. Please introduce me to this deodorant you love!? It’s hard to be more active and more smelly 🙁 Thank you for all you do!

I just found your Facebook page last week. My sister had turned me on to your cookbook for families and I am so glad she did. I have sense shared it with a few others too. My husband and I are both type 1 diabetics and have been since we were young children. Like most diabetics we know we are addicted to diet coke. We try to cut the habit which doesn’t fit in with our otherwise healthy food choices and of course our children are getting old enough to want their own diet coke (even our nine month old tries to get her hands on it). The dream item on the list for us is obviously the soda stream. I was not Ben aware of this product but it is on our short list for sure. I am really enjoying reading all the different posts thanks for sharing so much great knowledge.

Wow, decisions! Hmmm, I think definitely the meat first. I haven’t taken the plunge to order online yet, and I haven’t found a farmer as of yet. 2nd choice would be deoderant 🙂

Wow.  Great products!  I think I would have to say the soda stream.  We have been gluten, dairy and soy free for almost 18 months due to my son being diagnosed with autism and multiple food allergies.  Of course, my two daughters, husband and I all feel better too!   Soda is the one weakness we have ONCE in a while.  I would love to be able to give my kids a healthy version of soda and kick the sugary soda habit for good:).
We liked you on facebook as soon as we got your book (the day it was released).  I don’t have a twitter account. Thank you for yummy and healthy recipes.  The beef with broccoli is our favorite!

I recently bought an icecream maker from Costco after seeing it in ELaD. I tried your mint-chocochip icecream and would love to have more recipes to try!

One of the thongs I miss the most about going paleo are sandwich wraps. I’ve been wanting to try those coconut wraps but they’re a little out of my everyday budget. Great prize package!

Going to like you on facebook, I have been doing paleo for a year now, and am feeling so much better. So miss the bread for sandwiches, so those coconut wraps sound really good. Would love to get my hands on the ice cream book, we usually make up our own recipes with coconut milk, and some are good and some we will not repeat, so an actual ice cream book would be welcomed in our house. Thanks so much for the opprotunity to win!

Thanks for the giveaway and for sharing your favorite products!  I always love to hear what other people have found that they like.  I like you on FB, shared this post, and pinned a couple things on Pinterest.  It is hard to choose one item I want to try!  I think the top one would have to be the US Wellness Meats, but I’d also love to try the LAVANILA, Spunky’s book, and the Pure Wraps.  🙂

I’ve started Paelo about 6 weeks ago with great success. Would love to be able to get real grass fed meat in bulk from a farm. We’ve tried it a couple times from the market, but it isn’t really cost effective unless bought in bulk. Already following you on both twitter and Facebook, I’m just a dad looking to lead a healthy lifestyle for me and my two young boys.

My husband and I started on the Paleo diet a month ago.  He has already lost 30 pounds but weight loss was not his #1 reason to continue on the paleo diet.  Its the science backing that lures him.  I only found your site researching digestion issues on the paleo diet without a gallbladder.  It so cool how much we had in common in that area.  I have not explored your site yet but have friended you on Facebook immediately after reading that article.  FB is where I get all my updates really.  Love the requirements of this giveaway!!  I recently contacted one of MY favorite products just to tell them I love them and they sent me a hand full of coupons!  LOVE that!!!  First thing my husband and I want to do when we can is explore organically pastured meat and buy a whole cow and whole pig!  I personally was addicted to soda pre paleo and I think its the bubbles I loved most!  I don’t really miss the sugar anymore but sure do love those bubbled drinks!  For my kids sake I am happy to have read your wraps find.  Converting them to paleo too was not the easiest task!  If they work out, Its going add some diversity to their lunches!

I’d love the Pure Wraps. I just got married and moved to a place where my friends often go on runs/walks together followed by a picnic to fuel up and socialize. It’s great!!!… Except there’s very little food that I can pack without being all awkward. And I hate that my husband feels bad for me knowing that I’m hungry.

Wow!  Thanks for offering up so many great things.  We would love the Ice Cream cookbook.  We bought ELaD about a month ago and have already made the ice cream several times.  My 8yo daughter flips through the book almost daily and is constantly saying “let’s try this recipe.”  Thanks for writing such a great book that is both kid and adult friendly.  I tell other moms about it all the time.

I am diabetic and will be having my first child in September.
It has been a real challenge managing my health (and my baby’s)
throughout this pregnancy. I had to cut out so many foods that I
used to enjoy and it has not been easy. But because of this experience
I am now looking toward alternatives such as glutton free and sugar free
foods and recipes as well as eating less processed and more natural/organic
foods. This has been a slow process for me. I have been drinking raw
milk for over a year. My friend Chelsea Wipf has introduced me to many of these
things. I might not have tried it without her encouragement. I still have a long
way to go and lots to learn and research. We have a soda stream and I never
Even thought to make our own soda! All I know is I want a healthy lifestyle for myself
but especially for my child. I am glad my friend posted
this on Facebook. I will definitely be using this website for a reference!
    Thanks,
    Kelly

I am 7 months Paleo now. I have also lost nearly 60 pounds. I have given up quite a few things that I really do not miss, however, bubbly drinks would be awesome again. I never considered the possibility of one of these machines having Paleo possibilities. I would love to try the soda stream! My son is autistic and my converting the family to Paleo has shown me that there are far worse things that processed foods contribute to than just added weight. Love being primal!

I discovered La Vanilla after you recommended in a post last year. I LOVE it. I have tried every “natural” deodorant made in the last 10 years and this one leaves the others in the dust. I got it for my daughter and sister too. Our favourite. (thanks for the fun post)

    1. My “good person” tasks this week include several hours of volunteer time with Habitat for Humanity. 2. I already liked you on FB, and finally took the plunge to sign up for Twitter. 3. I’m gonna share this post on FB and go check out LaVanila and 4. I like to hear what products you recommend, and I want them all! Hmmm, Pure Wraps or Soda Stream? Soda Stream wins, because my DH drinks quite a bit of Diet 7UP and I think if we had a Soda Stream, he’d easily “convert” to that, which would be way better.
