And you get a car, and you get a car, and you get a car!
OK, maybe not. But Spring is coming and Mrs. O is no longer doing her show’s big Favorite Things episode, so how about one for you all? One of you will win your choice of one of of our favorite things!
Several times now we’ve highlighted to you some of the things we’re loving in what have become our Favorite Things series of posts. While we still love all of those things, there are some new things that we have really been digging lately and want to share them with all of you. We talk about them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, but we thought we would write a post of our NEW Favorite Things and offer one lucky winner the choice of one of the items. We will randomly choose a winner – see bottom of post for rules.
Some of our favorite foods
Sweet Potato Noodles - Because we are an active family, we enjoy plenty of safe starches and carbohydrates. One of our new favorite sources of carbohydrates to enjoy are these Asian sweet potato noodles! We find it most economical to order the 4 pack that we have linked to, and this is our favorite brand because it is free of any junky ingredients. We love using them in The Domestic Man‘s recipe for Japchae, featured in his new book, The Ancestral Table. These sweet potato noodles are also featured in many recipes of our PF Changs Recipe Recreation Round Up. They are best with Asian influenced dishes, and especially fun for kids to twirl with some chopsticks because they’re super long!
Cappello’s Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies – We have been long time fans of the chocolate chip cookie recipe by our friends Bill and Hayley of Primal Palate. Now they have teamed up with Cappello’s, the makers of gluten-free, grain-free, almond flour pasta (fettuccine, lasagna sheets, and gnocchi) , to offer cookie dough logs using their recipe. They come in a 2-pack, and keep nicely in the freezer. They might be more expensive than gluten and chemical filled cookie dough at the grocery store, but we bought a bunch with a group of people for a group discount on shipping and then keep them in the freezer for a “cookie emergency”. We love that the kids can literally make them themselves, especially when we KNOW they are ingredients we can trust!
Pure Wraps – These were mentioned in our last Favorite Things post, but then they went off the market for almost a year due to some legal and manufacturing issues. But now they’re back and we had to talk about them again! Most of the time we don’t miss sandwiches and bread, but every once in a while its nice to be able to use a wrap to hold some yummy fillings. Our kids love them in lunchboxes and picnics, and we completely trust the ingredients: Coconut meat, Coconut water, Himalayan salt. It’s so fantastic it’s almost unbelievable!
US Wellness Meat Sticks – These are hands down the best easy protein snack we have found. Ever had a slim jim? These are just like those, but without any chemicals, food dyes, or gluten, and they are made from grassfed beef! We keep them for the times we’re running late and need to grab a good fuel source for the kids that isn’t sweet. We like both the sticks and the cheaper “ends” which are actually the perfect size for toddlers to pick up.
EPIC Protein Bars – EPIC is such a cool company. They make protein bars that are made of REAL grassfed animal protein – not powders, but actual meat! These bars are made “By combining delicious tasting and lightly smoked animal protein with savory nuts and dehydrated fruits, EPIC foods taste amazing! EPIC foods are unique in the sense that they are more savory, tender, and flavor-forward than jerky without the high carbohydrate and sugar load of other bars. ” There is literally nothing else like these on the market, and we are so happy that there is a REAL, WHOLE FOOD protein bar out there for us to use for recovery after workouts, and as a quick snack.
TESSEMAE’S Dressings – While we do make a lot of our own dressings so that we can control the quality of the ingredients, there is ONE dressing out there that almost all Paleo Peeps can agree is a god-send. Tessemaes. Stacy posts pictures of her lunch almost every day, and she almost ALWAYS has a salad with Tessemae’s Lemon Garlic dressing. It’s easy for Stacy to keep it in the fridge at work, and delicious every time! Our new favorites are Honey Mustard and the kids like the Raspberry Dressing!
Whole Me – This company out of the twin cities is run by two highly ambitious women who are very talented in both business and the culinary arts. Our whole family loves their bars and cereal, and we were so pleased that they reached their goal with their latest Kickstarter campaign. With this accomplishment, they will be able to expand their brand so that we might see them available in stores soon! Their products can be ordered online.
Goodbody Bites -Our kiddos are big fans of Goodbody bites! We even let them do the review for them last summer. We buy through Abe’s Market, which is a great online resource for healthy, gluten free foods! We love that they’re stored in the fridge or freezer so they don’t tempt us too much, and a bag is perfect for us to share for movie nights! You can get 15% off right now with code ITSABOY (exp 2/28/14)!
Kitchen Gadgets and Toys
Spiralizer - How can you get your kids to eat their zucchini? Turn them into ZOODLES! We promise they won’t be able to get enough. Let them help gather the noodles, or even older kids can help turn the crank. When kids get involved with making dinner, and especially preparing the vegetables, they are WAY more likely to eat it!
Meat Slicer – Stacy just gave this meat slicer to Matt for his birthday! Now we can make our own thinly sliced roast beef and other homemade deli meats a cinch. We can also use this slicer like a mandolin on veggies and also when making homemade super thin slices of jerky and bacon! We haven’t had much time to play with this new toy but are looking forward to it!
Heritage Mason Jars – Ball has a new line of Heritage Mason Jars that come in both blue and green. We love mason jars and we love all things vintage. We have quite a collection of tinted and clear jars that we have collected from antique shops, but we love these new ones too. Mason Jars are valuable to us for storing homemade EVERYTHING from sauces to chicken salad. Many of you loved our idea to use them to store nuts in our pantry, so go get your own!
Food Grinder Attachment – We use our food grinder attachment for making our own sausage and also grinding bacon to go in our famous 50/50 burgers. We also recommend this Kitchen Aid attachment for people just starting out eating offal, as you can grind up liver and heart to incorporate into burger patties and sausage. You won’t even know the offal is there, and when you make your own sausage, like our recipes in Beyond Bacon, you can control the ingredients and make sure that they are free of sugar, dyes, and artificial flavors.
Silicone Molds for Gummies – We love using Grass Fed Gelatin to make gummies with our kids. Many recipes can be made without added sweeteners other than fruit, and with fun shapes like LEGOS, Robots and Dinosaurs, and Pac Man Shapes getting nutrient dense collagen is fun! Need some recipe idea? Check out our gelatin round up with over SIXTY recipe ideas.
Some Girly Things
In this post, Stacy talked about her beauty routine, but so many women ask her every day about her make-up, we thought we would include it here as a refresher.
Stacy absolutely loves Jane Iredale Face Pressed Foundation – it was originally recommended to her by Hayley, of Primal Palate, who is a trained make-up artist, in addition to Paleo Blogger and Cookbook Author extraordinaire. This foundation is gluten-free and makes Stacy’s skin flawless and lasts through a busy work day and a workout afterwards. Even plastic surgeons and spas use this make-up for their clients because of how gentle it is.
Tarte mascara – Finding gluten-free mascara is HARD and finding gluten-free mascara that looks better than anything you have ever tried? Even harder. Stacy’s favorite is by Tarte and is made of Amazonian clay. It works best with the primer pictured here.
Gwynnie Bee clothing exchange: I’m officially hooked! I kept hearing about this monthly fashion club from my friends, but I didn’t “fit” their sizing. So I found a similar program for curvy girls. I got my first set of garments this month and am hooked! I normally would NEVER buy a dress this vibrant, but getting to try it out via the club was so much fun. Can’t wait to continue to get more clothes shipped every month! Also… love that I have the option to keep & buy items. Because I don’t know if I can part with this dress… Despite thinking I don’t like wearing colors or patterns! If you’re interested in finding out more, check it out yourself and get a FREE 30 day trial.
LaVanila Deodorant and perfumes – Stacy has bragged about this amazing line of deodorants for a while, but now she has her whole team hooked! Stacy’s favorite is the Vanilla Passion Fruit, Courtney loves the Pure Vanilla, and Katy likes the Vanilla Lavender the best. Stacy also notes that the perfumes are just as wonderful smelling, and free of nasty ingredients. Stacy says, “I’ve tried almost every healthy deodorant on the market and they all left me feeling like a stinky hippy at the end of a long day. With 5pm meetings in a corporate world, I can’t feel stinky and was about ready to give up… until I found LAVANILA. It was quite an initial sticker shock, but I bought it at Sephora/Amazon where they accept returns unconditionally. I figured if I didn’t like it or find it worth the money I’d return it. Instead I ended up going back weeks later and buying by the bulk! The stuff left me feeling clean, fresh and feminine all day long. It ends up costing about $.50/day (lasts about 6 weeks). For me, that’s a worthy investment!”
PANACHE SPORTS BRA – People ask Stacy all the time about her work-out clothes, and the truth is, that the most important thing for a full figured woman is an excellent sports bra. This one stays in place, has excellent support, and comes in lots of colors.
